We introduced an online Math program today called Prodigy. It seems pretty cool so far! Students have their own login and password to access quests assigned by the teacher. Their individualized wizards defend by casting spells they get by correctly answering math questions. Students are able to access this program from home at www.prodigygame.com. They should use the username and password provided to them in class.
We had a busy week in Grade 3! Some highlights include:
- we finished up our unit on Data Management and started our new unit - Patterning - we wrote "My Bad Day" - gifted screening test took place on Tuesday - we started a vermi-compost in Science - picture retakes were on Wednesday - we created a pattern with our name and then used the ipads to record our explanation of the patterns - we played "Roll and Retell". See pictures below: I love seeing kids read together! Today, when they finished their book, they took turns rolling the number cube and following the prompt for Roll and Retell (answering orally). This served as a good step towards students being able to write their own recount independently. Tomorrow is the practice test for gifted screening. A permission form went home explaining what this is. If you want your child to participate, you will have to send the signed permission form tomorrow. Students who are not participating will be doing regular literacy activities during testing time.
We are finishing up our unit on Data Management. Last week students had the chance to create a bar graph with data we collected on Smarties - how fun! This week, we will wrap up with some more problem solving and a lesson on mode. Quiz date will be announced tomorrow. Students will have the opportunity to bring the review home before then. In Writing, we are working on paragraphs. The success criteria is that students' paragraphs: - have the first line indented - have a topic sentence (that doesn't contain any details) - 3 or more supporting details that directly support the topic sentence - a concluding sentence that restates the topic/opinion - contain 5-star sentences Picture Retake Day - November 5 We had our first Character Education assembly today to recognize the character trait of inclusiveness. Kyla Y. was the recipient, however she was absent today. Kural was the recipient of the Principal's Award this month. Our class is very proud of both of them!
We are crossing our fingers for good weather tomorrow as we hope to have our dance party for raising over $3000 for the Terry Fox Foundation in the afternoon. We enjoyed hearing about some of our classmate's name stories. Students are very interested in this activity, so I encourage those who haven't completed the Name Survey yet to do so. We will be following up with a writing activity where students will write about their name story. Today in math, we started learning about how to write a good survey question. Students will have the opportunity to create a survey question, collect the data, and graph the results. Desi will be celebrating a birthday this weekend. Happy Birthday, Desi! Thank you so much to all the parents and students who came out to Meet the Teacher - it was so nice to see all of you!
We have some exciting news to share! We met (and exceeded) our goal of raising $3000 for the Terry Fox Foundation! As a reward, the students will enjoy an outdoor dance party on Friday afternoon. I've heard there might be some kind of frozen treat served as well. Way to go Falcons! The grand total raised will be announced on Friday. Please check your child's backpack or agenda this evening for a new notebook. I've sent each student home with a homework book that will stay at home, only returned once a month on the due date indicated (the last school day of each month). Here's the scoop on this program: It is 100% optional! Many parents ask for homework that supports the Grade 3 program, while just as many parents would prefer that their child have the evening free for extra-curricular activities as well as down time and family time. The activities each month support the Grade 3 program and are aligned with curriculum expectations. They are intended to be extra practice for learned or soon-to-be-learned skills at school. A student can still be successful without completing the activities, so not to worry if they are not completed. If, however, your child chooses to complete the activities, I will take a look and provide feedback where applicable. Students who complete all the activities will receive a "Good Choice" ticket for our class draw, as well as a fancy pencil for their efforts. Welcome to our Grade 3 Class Website. Here you will find information on what we are doing in class, important dates, and links to websites that support at home learning.
