RetellWe are learning to retell a story.
I can tell you: - who the CHARACTERS are - what the SETTING is - what the PROBLEM is - what the EVENTS are (beginning, middle, end) - what the SOLUTION is At home, have your child go through a retell orally, following the success criteria to tell you the important parts of the book he or she just read. A fun online activity: http://en.akinator.com/ The genie will ask you a series of questions about a character. At the end, he makes a guess as to who the character is. I tried it out with Geronimo Stilton and the genie guessed it correctly! |

Reading
In Reading we are working on:
Decoding Strategies:
We are learning different ways to figure out words we don't know when we are reading.
"Just Right" Books:
We are learning how to choose books that are just right for us. What this means is that most of the time, we want to be reading books that we can read and understand on our own. There are a few words that we might struggle with - no more than 5 on a page - but it doesn't affect our understanding or enjoyment of the book.
In class, we discussed that reading books that are "Easy" or "Challenging" are OK sometimes too. For example, there is a lot of value to and enjoyment in reading a favourite picture book from time to time. And we may enjoy a non-fiction book that is of interest to us that is challenging. Students must always have a "Just Right" book in their book box.
